Content is King - SEO is the Court Jester

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, has been the Flash intro of the last few years. Everyone wants to be number one - and they're willing to go to great lengths to get there. The market has followed, with "SEO Coaches" charging ridiculous fees to increase page ranking. These so-called experts are playing a game of cat and mouse - they find a way to exploit the system, the search engines notice and change their programming, rinse and repeat.

There is undoubtedly value in a higher page rank - they say the number one result for a particular keyword sees around 50% of clicks. That's a lot of hits. The problem though, is that site owners are neglecting their content. What we're starting to see are highly-ranked sites that are not only useless but terribly designed. What good are 1000 hits per day if people take one look and hit the back button? Get your site in order before you spend one minute on SEO.

Once you do decide to focus on it, please don't pay anyone to do it. Their methods are questionable, their effectiveness suspect, and if you do see results, they're very likely temporary. There are ways to increase your site ranking yourself, and they're not hard to do.

Be Helpful

A large factor in page ranking is the number of backlinks you have, or links into your site. A bad way to get these is to spam or pay some sort of link exchange service. A good way? Help people. Join a forum on something related to your business and participate with meaningful comments. Make sure your signature contains your URL - you now have a valid backlink on a page directly related to your content. Same goes for blogs and comments. Again, be useful. Don't just say something like "Great post!"

Search engines love updated content. Everyone with a website should seriously consider creating a blog section and posting at least once a week. Be sure to keep the blog posts related to your site's content, and try to spark conversations through the comments.

Get Listed

It's important your site is included in all major directories - Bing, Yahoo, Google, and Ask.com are all big ones. There are many others, of course, some which may be directly related to your field. For example, my company is listed on sites with directories of web designers. Here's a tip - one of the most highly esteemed directories is called DMOZ. It's extremely selective, and hard to get in - all submissions are hand screened. If you do manage to get in there, it'd be a great bump in page rank.

OK, so it was a stretch - it worked for a title. SEO is important, but the point I was trying to get across was that it should be secondary. Every single time I speak to a client for the first time, they bring up SEO - before we even talk about a platform or color scheme or social media. Build a solid site with current, fresh, and relevant content - the hits and page rank will follow in time.

Halloween-Related Web Searches Can Lead to Malware

Security researchers from Panda Security warn that malware pushers have poisoned the search results for numerous Halloween-related keywords with malicious links.

Halloween is only a few days away and, as we estimated a week ago, the attacks targeting this holiday are intensifying.

Some of the most popular Halloween searches, such as "Halloween costumes", "Halloween decorations", "Halloween ideas", "adult Halloween costumes" or "free pumpkin pattern", have been affected by the latest black hat search engine optimization (BHSEO) campaigns.

Black hat SEO is the practice of artificially increasing a website's PageRank, through various techniques, in order for it to appear higher in search results for particular keywords.

Cybercriminals have gotten so good at it, that they frequently manage to push their malicious links in the top spots.

The method is usually used to direct visitors to scareware websites, but in this latest series of attacks, the malware pushers are using a "free video" lure.

An image mimicking a Web player is displayed on the landing pages and an associated message instructs users to click on a link, in order to install Flash, if the video doesn't start.

The file served for download actually installs a computer trojan, which is used as a distribution platform for other malware.

In such pay-per-install schemes, other criminals pay the trojan authors to have their own malicious applications delivered to the already compromised computers.

"Installing the software results in a trojan infection monetized via fake antivirus software," warns Sean-Paul Correll, a security researcher at Panda.

The fake antivirus family of malware is comprised of applications posing as legit security programs, that try to convince users to pay for licenses.

They achieve this by employing scare tactics, such as displaying fake alerts about fictitious threats allegedly found on the computer and claiming that an additional pay-only component is required to remove them.

Users are advised to surf with an up-to-date antivirus installed and to be very suspicious of any website, that asks them to install software in order to access content or warns them about infections on their systems.

We’re roughly a week away from Halloween and I still can’t decide what I’m gonna be! First I thought about dressing myself up as a homeless person referring to myself as a “link beggar”. Each and every day we find new reasons to convince other people that it’s a good idea to link to specific pages within our website. Techniques such as unique content, badges, brewing up controversy, personalized e-mails and infographics are pretty commonly used to obtain links. The question is “are SEO’s manipulating webmasters?” Let’s further break this down into two separate thoughts.

Getting The Biggest Bang From Your Link.

It’s only natural that as people find value in content that they will link, tweet, like and otherwise share it with people. One train of thought is that an SEO is not necessarily manipulating webmasters but getting the biggest bang from the existing link opportunity. My personal opinion on the matter is that you’re maximizing the value of every link opportunity. What a surprise that an SEO would think this right? That’s why I have taken the time to think from the other end too. I think SEO’s can be deceptive without even being a ‘black-hat’ SEO. What do you think of this? Domain Names Are Still Key to Search Engine Optimization

Last night at the SEOmoz meetup in Avi Wilensky's incredible office space, a frequent topic of discussion both during the presentations/Q+A and in small group networking before and after was the propensity for Google (and Bing) to bias towards exact match domains in the rankings.

How big an issue is exact-match domains? Let's look at some data from our correlation analysis from SMX Advanced earlier this year:


Just by itself, exact match is remarkably high in correlation to rankings. No other on-site/on-page factor we examined even came close. Granted, that's not causation, and it could be other factors influencing those impressively high rankings. Let's get a bit deeper and more granular around the issue:


Holy what?! Actually, this probably isn't very surprising to most SEOs. The second highest correlation we found of anything - links, on-page elements, URL factors, keyword usage, third-party metrics  (excluding only Page Authority scores, which are specifically designed to predict Google rankings) was exact-match .com domain names. Yeah - it's powerful stuff

We can also look at the raw prominence (less interesting for determining what might help a page/site rank, but useful for this application:


That's saying that more than 1/4 and nearly 1/3 SERPs contain an exact match domain in the top 10. The only thing more prominent?


No surprise it's keyword-in-the-domain matches (but not necessarily exact). So, in the first pie chart set, we'd say that for the query "org chart" only orgchart.* type domains would count. In the second, something like myorgcharts.com, greatorgcharts.net, etc. would fit the pattern. These appear in around half of all SERPs on both engines.

The question is, with search results in so many sectors becoming so overrun with obviously over-SEO'd, spammy, manipulative and sometimes, downright poor quality exact-match domains, is Google bound to take action?

Blueglass' Chris Winfield argued that Google is bound to giving outsized benefit to exact match domains because of the brand intent behind so many queries. Since a search for "Alaska Airlines" or "MSN" or "NY Times" is likely to want exactly those websites in the first position, Google's overcompensating in the broader algorithm by biasing towards these exact matches. Many in the audience agreed (and I personally find this viewpoint credible, too).

Interestingly, some of the more experienced, ear-to-the-ground SEO types indicated that they'd heard (or believed) that Google would soon be taking action against exact match domains. One person, who wasn't at the event, but whom I trust a great deal (and will remain anonymous) indicated they thought the next 6 months would bring about this shift.

Personally, I'd welcome it as both a searcher and an SEO. I think Google's relied on exact match for far too long, and it would give them a substantive quality boost over Bing to have more subtlely in the domain matching algo. But, as always, I'm curious to hear what you think - is this really a weakness/problem? Should Google take action? Do you think they will (particularly given the poor track record of improvements like this in the past year or so)?

A completely unrelated p.s. Linking to Twitter profiles (as I did at the start of the post) is curious. Notice that the URLs if you're logged into Twitter look like http://twitter.com/#!/aviw instead of http://twitter.com/aviw. Now,this could be an incredibly dumb move, but actually, both Twitter and Facebook are using Google's new AJAX crawling protocol. Not as SEO-ignorant as they look, eh? :-)

On-page Optimization is Dead

The SEOMoz team caused an amusing furore when they calculated that a new metric they had discovered had more correlation between high LDA scores and high rankings than any other factor. 

LDA, or latent Dirichlet allocation, is effectively one way of measuring relevance without counting keywords, so a crawling tool can "read" two pieces of copy and rate them according to which is better written. It does this by looking for related keywords rather than necessarily for the actual keyword itself. 

As a quick example, I know that a block of text mentioning "petrol money," "excitement," "anticipation," and "gutted" is more relevant to a keyword search for [Liverpool FC fan blog] than a block of text mentioning "Anfield," "Kenny Dalglish," and "Champions." 

Search engines need this type of insight into content to make their results more accurate. Plus, it has the added benefit of being able to pick out spammy, badly written, or spun content. 

What was particularly amusing was how worked up some of the search engine optimization (SEO) community got about this factor. Taking away for a second that the original calculations were wrong anyway and that actually, having a high "LDA" score isn't as much of a secret to top rankings as it was first claimed -- it remains an important point that there are more than 200 ranking factors. 

Some factors are certainly more influential on rankings than others, but in an increasingly competitive environment, it seems to me that it is better to do 100 things 1 percent better, rather than one thing 100 percent better. Sounds like the type of advice I would get from my dad, actually, but it's probably right for SEO. 

Let's look at some examples to highlight what we're talking about here. Here are the top 10 results for [car insurance] and the number of times each ranking page mentions "car insurance" specifically:

As you can see, there is actually an inverse relationship here, so Google can see that the content is about the same theme, and could even be penalizing content that mentions the keyword too many times. 

Moving onto some keyword search for [televisions], the same is true here -- fewer mentions = better results:

But here's where it got interesting! Doing the same for [dresses] shows that the more times the keyword was mentioned, the higher the ranking!

One thing we sometimes forget to do in SEO is to look at a much bigger picture than numbers of links, LDA scores, keyword density, and remember to think about the full user journey -- a human user journey -- and optimize for that. 

Google has a lot of very clever people working on a lot of very advanced algorithms. Rather than trying to keep up and discover ways of cheating the system, we should spend more time looking at how a human sees our sites and engages with them, and how a well-run advertising campaign or a brilliant social strategy would affect our link profile and try to mirror that. 

When they manage to crack the algorithm for identifying sarcasm, they will truly be able to build a picture of the web and what people are thinking -- plus they can sell it to the Americans as an app (joking!).
So, by all means, keep up with the latest metrics for success. Read into how the search engines are evolving their algorithms. But don't forget that no single metric is 100 percent of the picture. 

No top ranking site is the best for every ranking factor. Each keyword will likely have a different search relevance profile. 

Most importantly, don't forget people have to actually use your site and read your content when they get there. 

Also don't forget on-page optimization is dead.

What Is Search Engine Optimization?

A Very Brief History Of SEO

Back when SEO started, SEO wasn't called SEO. It was probably best described by those who did it as a form of hacking.

The first search engines weren't particularly clever, so it was relatively easy to figure out their sorting algorithms. There was a time when Infoseek's algorithm was almost entirely based on keyword density and keyword position.

Whilst this hacking was still ultimately about money, it was as much a game as anything else. I'm sure many old school SEOs remember those days with a sense of nostalgia. It was more of a pure technical pursuit back then.

As search engines got more sophisticated, and more money flowed online, the nature of the game changed. SEO moved beyond technical hacking to an exercise in making connections.

In Googles early days, you could buy a few high PR links - or beg for them - and that was enough to get you ranking top ten in most keyword areas. Buy a few more if you really wanted to go hard. Saturate the long tail with auto-gen, just like your competitors were doing, and it was game on. Some may say we haven't completely left this phase, but the sun is setting on this approach.

These days, a more holistic approach is required. The search engines, Google in particular, have become more and more oblique, which means systematic technical approaches are less effective than they once were. This begs the question - what is a client hiring an SEO to do, exactly?

Explaining SEO

Ever had trouble explaining to people what you do?

I've worked out a succinct answer that is easy for non-technical people to understand. When people ask me what I do, I tell them "I'm a drug dealer".

It isn't true, of course, but I just figure it's easier for people to grasp. If pushed, I'll launch into a detailed explanation of SEO, internet advertising and web publishing models - an explanation which is universally guaranteed to be met with the response "huh"?.

Often, they'll conclude: "so you rank web sites in Google, then?".

To which my reply is "well, that's part of it". As I explain further, I'm still not sure I'm making any headway, so figure it's time everyone had another drink and talk about something else.

The SMX panel is right. SEO is not about just about ranking websites, it's about so much more. Some SEOs, myself included, use SEO as part of a business strategy, a strategy that is just as much about publishing, domain names, brand building, marketing and traffic acquisition. It involves metrics, tracking, conversions, split/run testing, adwords, adsense, writing, researching, managing and changing the light-bulb in the office when it blows. The commonality is that it is oriented around the search ecosystem. Except for the light-bulb.

Some SEOs focus on very specific areas. It is their job to take a site from nowhere in the search engines to achieving desirable rankings. Their job ends there. I suspect such a role is becoming less common as search companies like Google extend their tentacles into every corner of the web, and search consultants invariably follow.

Ask ten different SEOs what they do, and you'll probably get ten different answers. None of which the lay person will likely understand, unfortunately.
Learning SEO Today

It helps to understand the big picture first. The reason people engage in SEO is ultimately about making money. Even a non-profit may make money from SEO by saving money they would have spent on some other marketing channel.

They want people to find their web site. They want people to connect with them, rather than their competitors. They want people to do this so they can convert these people to buyers, of their goods, their services, or their ideas. If a site were only to rank - say, on keyword terms no-one searched for, or that weren't directly applicable to the objectives of the business, then the SEO work is largely useless. It matters not if a site appears in Google's index. If no one visits via a search in Google, then all that's happened is the bandwidth costs have increased i.e. Google's spider visits and digests pages, and the ROI for the SEO spend looks dire.

So SEO isn't about rankings.

The rankings must translate to something tangible. In most cases, this means gaining qualified visitor traffic. To get this traffic, a site must do more than rank, a site must appeal to visitors. A visitor who clicks back isn't really a visitor. To appeal to visitors, the SEO must first understand them. What do they want? What problem do they have?

What Social Media Can Teach Us About SEO

If you participate in social media activities, I'm sure that I can get you to agree to one thing…the idea here is to "give" before you can expect to "get."

What I mean by that is that to be successful with social media marketing, and building up your following (or whatever your end goal may be), you must provide great content to achieve anything.

So many companies and individuals still haven't seemed to grasp that basic concept. They want to build out their social profiles so that they can push marketing messages to an audience (akin to newsletter blasts). They forget that the idea behind successful social media marketing initiatives is to engage in an interactive discussion and build relationships. Then, after you have earned the right, perhaps you can make a subtle suggestion that they check out the latest/greatest goings-on at your company, or be made aware of a promotion that you are running.

To gain a following, you would either have to commit yourself to pushing out great content, or otherwise hire (pay for) someone to do this for you. In time, you might just earn the popularity/presence that you desire. Yes, there are ways to automate the growth of followers (follow me and I'll follow you – sounds like reciprocal link building, doesn't it?) and then you can, to make your Twitter profile look more discerning, delete those that you follow.

A similar issue exists with many websites which are trying to earn "authority" in the search engines. You can certainly buy links (as you've somewhat "bought friends," in the example above), and you can do reciprocal link building, if you wish, but the best and "correct" way to build a successful Web presence for search engine optimization is to create good, resourceful content that folks might want to "naturally" link to.

Case in Point

I currently work with a very large website that probably has six million. Truth is, a very small percentage of this content is resourceful, or even "good" for that matter. None of this was a surprise. Before we committed to providing search engine optimization services to this client, we first wanted to know that they were committed to some serious heavy lifting when it came time to write content.

Their existing setup is to use content rewriting software that can make sure that content is "no more than XX percent duplicated." The content that it churns out is not exactly of a high quality. While we've been "successful" in helping them to grow the number of pages indexed, it doesn't matter, because we have yet to get the content rewritten/created in such a way as to lead the search engines to believe that it's the kind of content that deserves to rank well in the SERPs.

Blogging

We have been successful in getting this client to post quality content within their blog. Previously, their posts were the type that you might find on any personal blog. That is to say, random, and not at all relevant to their business. So, step one here was to define the categories for their blog, to help them organize their post writing, keep them on track, and help them build relevant content on their domain (the blog is hosted on the site at www.sitename.com/blog). Now, when they post, they can be assured that the content that they're adding is actually helping their SEO efforts. When we assist clients with blog setup, we're also helping them establish best practices as to the type of content that they should be writing under each category. We want to provide helpful/resourceful information for their target audience. What type of questions are people searching that our client may be able to answer? What type of valuable content could our client give away, that people might appreciate so much that they'd be able to link to it/source it and reference it to others through social means?

Many new clients believe that climbing the rankings is down to technical tweaking of the website, when actually it’s hugely influenced by the number of inbound links to a site. 

You see, search engines like Google look at what value the rest of the web places on a particular web property.

How often other relevant websites talk about a site and, crucially, link to it, is a far better way for an algorithm to determine which pages are going to be useful to searchers. 

It’s going to place far more value on peer assessment than it does on the metadata you post up.

Think about it, when you search for ‘cheap socks’, do you want to see what other people found useful or a list of websites that want to sell you socks, cheap or otherwise?

Encouraging inbound links to your pages is crucial. If you build them, they will come. Customers, that is, not baseball players.

So how can you generate this elusive link juice for your site? Here are my top tips for beginners.

Strike all thoughts of link farms from your mind

Let’s get one thing straight, it isn’t about the sheer quantity of links to your website anymore. Search engines are cleverer than that, they want to see links from relevant and authoritative websites before they rocket you up the rankings.

Don’t shell out cash to some poxy link farm business thinking it will help. Some search engines, including the behemoth that is Google, will penalise your website if you’re caught relying on a farm.
At best they’re useless, at worst, they’re actively harmful.

Create valuable pages

The very best way to encourage inbound links is to fill your pages with valuable, useful, informative, interesting, relevant content. Simple, right?

One great way to do this is to set up a blog, allowing you to post guides, industry news and opinion pieces. If your posts are interesting then people will naturally link to them as they discuss, rebut or expand on your comments.

Sometimes, you’ll really strike gold with a post and it will go viral. There’s a really good example of that over at Econsultancy just now, where the article ‘Ten horrifying display ad placements’ generated almost 2,000 tweets, over 100 comments and who knows how many inbound links?

Articles that do so brilliantly are known as ‘link bait’, because people will want to link to them. There’s nothing sinister about deliberately posting such bait, it is simply that you’ve created something very popular.
In fact, it’s exceptionally difficult to do, even newspapers only manage it now and again. 

Johann Hari’s ‘Welcome to Cameron land’ was a good example of a mainstream article going viral, with 25,000 Facebook recommendations and almost 3,500 tweets. It probably wasn’t designed as link bait, it’s just an example of how powerful writing can be.

You have to be interesting

I am really going off the saying ‘content is king’ because it just doesn’t convey enough.

Let’s be frank, what’s in my bin can be described as its ‘content’, but I want some pretty different ‘content’ in my sandwich.

Content isn’t king; that implies the churned out garbage of rewritten press releases and plagiarised copy is useful when it comes to SEO.

Relevant, interesting, valuable copy is king and it takes time and skill to create.

It could be a blog, it could be a series of videos, it could be some amusing game that goes viral. Just make it interesting. The web is full when it comes to barely literate ramblings.

Make industry friends

One key way to build inbound links to your pages is to place guest posts on other industry blogs and include links to your own website.

However, that is much, much harder than it sounds. Although you might think blogs are crying out for content, if you don’t have a reputation as an industry authority then no one will be that keen to carry your copy.

In fact, knowing the value of a link to your website, some powerful blogs will try to charge you money for carrying your post.

The best way to avoid this kind of situation is to make friends with the humans behind the blogs.

It shouldn’t be too hard to make industry friends – follow them on twitter, comment on their blogs and (best of all) corner them at conferences and buy them a beer.

Making friends in your industry will be rewarding because you’ll learn a lot in discussion with them, your finger will be more on the pulse of your sector and you’ll stand a much better chance of being invited to place articles on their blogs.

The internet is a social place, so be sociable.

Use the right anchor text

The anchor text that’s used to link to your site matters, so bear that in mind when you’re writing guest posts. Using relevant keywords reinforces your page’s relevance for that keyword.

Far too often you see ‘click here for more information’, when it could be something better like ‘book cheap flights’ or ‘compare car insurers’ or ‘bird-safe slug pellets’ or whatever it is you sell.

Don’t miss out on the chance to reiterate to the search engines just how relevant your pages are to those search terms.

This is also relevant when choosing headlines for posts on your own blog. People will probably link to your pages using your headline, so it’s worth including keywords there when you can.

Of course, don’t let your keywords spoil your headlines, they are the hook that encourages people to read and then share your content.

Make the most of your position

Not everyone reading this will be a business. You might be a charity, sports team, music act, comedian… Everyone is trying to promote themselves online these days.

If you are an organisation that people want to support then design a badge and ask people to place it on their sites. They’ll be happy to support you, it will drive up brand awareness and you’ll receive a link.

The Balance of Power is Shifting from Google to Facebook

Today's deal between Facebook and Microsoft, which allows Microsoft's Bing search engine to incorporate your Facebook "like" data into its relevance rankings, illustrates how the balance of power on the Internet is shifting from search to social networking. 
Microsoft got interested in search in 2003 for a lot of reasons, not least because it saw how Google was shaping the behavior of Internet users.

In user testing and from various data collection systems like the MSN toolbar, Microsoft noticed that a lot of users started each Web surfing session by entering a search term into Google, and returned to the site throughout the day.
